If you are a Pennsylvania resident, listen up!

This has gone on far longer than it should have. The state of Pennsylvania has not been able to create a state budget for education and social services to use since the beginning of the school year. It is now almost seven months over due. Government officials haven’t been able to agree on a “justified” budget, and they keep on pulling out, causing major issues to happen in Pennsylvania’s society. Let me just give you some points about what’s going on without money:

  1. Schools and centers are closing, and at an especially fast rate in low-income areas such as Philadelphia.
  2. Speaking of Philadelphia, if a budget wasn’t agreed on come December (news flash—there wasn’t), dozens of more schools in the city would have to close starting in January, and teachers would have to begin to work without pay.
  3. That’s right, you heard that. Teachers are working without pay. But there are other areas in the state where teachers have been working with no pay since August.
  4. Districts have had to take out loans just to keep their doors open.
  5. Other social and human health services, such as domestic abuse centers, have also not received any funding because of this budget crisis.

If you are a Pennsylvania resident, please consider filling out this generated form produced by the Public Citizens for Children + Youth that will be passed on to your local PA representatives. It is becoming harder and harder to reach them by phone, so sending them emails such as this is the easiest way to voice your concerns.

And if you’re not a Pennsylvania resident, pass this on. There is no excuse that children don’t have a safe place to go to, whether it’s a shelter or a school, because politicians can’t agree on how to use funding for their own state.

“With free full-day preschool as the centerpiece of his education agenda, Mayor Bill de Blasio has more than tripled enrollment since he took office — leaving some observers to wonder whether the city was trading quantity of seats for quality. The new data, compiled from reviews of a portion of the city’s 1,800 pre-K sites that were conducted from 2012 to the present, shows that the quality of New York’s pre-K program is on par with other cities.”
